Bearpig's Knitting: lesson 2

Sneaking another one…but not my fault! ;-) February 4, 2010

Really it’s not my fault! Honest!  It’s because I’m taking the knitting class.  I had a light bulb moment while knitting on the streetcar the other morning.  If I could knit a baby sweater from the top down with no seams, couldn’t I then knit anything without seams?  Just have to alter the patterns right?  Like my mom’s cardigan…or the ghost of my mom’s cardigan…could have been knitted without seams!  Though I would probably have to learn how to completely alter a pattern from flat to round.

So, on Jan. 24th I went to the first of two classes to teach me how to knit a baby sweater without seams and from the top down.  It was a nice class.   I picked some nice cotton wool (can I call it wool if it didn’t come from an animal?) as well as some for my own stash, a very fine baby alpaca – so soft!  And with my 16″ 4.5mm circular needle I set to work along with 4 other women.  I learnt how to do a kfb stitch (knit in the front and back of the stitch) which is not so hard once you get going.  I also learnt how to cast on extra stitches in the middle of my work, not to be confused with the middle of the row, but adding more stitches rows after I’ve already cast on.  And, I was also reminded how to cast on using two needles.  I prefer to use the long tail cast on.  We’re supposed to work up to the armpits but I think I’m going to do more – in fact I know I’m going to do more.

I’ve added the pattern to the pattern page!  I’ll let you know how it turns out!

Sneaking one in! Shhhhh…. January 22, 2010

I’m sneaking a little itty bitty project in!  A scarf, I think it will be ribbed.  It’s Berroco Peruvia wool that I bought a while ago.  It calls for size US 11 needles but I only have 13 and 10.5.  So I’m going with the 10.5 and I think it’s going to be ribbed.   Maybe I’ll document it along the way!

Wound and ready to go!

17 rows in

Definitely ribbed.  I cast on 24 stitches so it’s not to wide but not to narrow.

Next colour!

And we're striping!

I’m getting an itch! January 20, 2010

I’m supposed to be working on the 2nd (and last) sleeve for my mom’s cardi… supposed to be! ;-)

But I’m getting an itch to start a new project.  A scarf…yes another one.  But an easier and quicker one!  I just might!  I’ll keep you posted on which one I decide!

Ommmmmm January 19, 2010

It has been 18 days since I last ‘blogged’!  It feels longer and shorter.  I can’t believe that it is almost February! Where does the time go?

I think I need to take a whole month off – paid of course! ;-)   Just to regroup, relax, and get things done.  That would be nice…and needed!

I’ve registered with my mom for another knitting class at lettuceknit.  It’s called the log cabin blanket class.

Happy New Year!!! January 1, 2010

Filed under: Odds and Ends — caboozan @ 2:50 pm

Well, we are embarking on a new decade ready or not! The past ten years really have flown by and it seems like only yesterday I was in my early twenties!  It reminded me I need to do more, enjoy more, try more, accept more, and be open to more. Yes, that is kind of my new years resolution – though not so much a resolution but a way to be.

As for other news, the scarf was received very warmly!  I’m glad it was liked!  I did pick up my mother’s project – though with not as much rush but I’ve been working on it for over a year so… let’s get it done already right?!  There’s really  not much left – a sleeve, some ribbing/trim, and to put it all together!

I’ve realized that as great as a vacation is, a home bound vacation is also really good!  Because not only can you relax and sleep in but you can catch up and get stuff done! Though I won’t be taking a home vacation I’m going to try to rest more, be stressed less, and get more things done.  Is that even possible you ask?  We shall see, we shall definitely see!

This morning, I like many of you, woke up to see snow falling (not on the ground though- too warm) and it was beautiful.  They were big, fat flakes!

I’m off to knit some more and think about my checklist and being less stressed!  And you?

Ahhhhhh December 31, 2009

I’ve put the needles down!  I have *magically* finished the Harry Potter Scarf!  Thank goodness!  I will post a picture as soon as I can move my fingers – I know I know! I’m moving them now as I type.  Would you believe me if I said I’m typing one key at a time? Ya, me neither! :-)

Nonetheless, it is done and I’m going to rest my wrists!

It’s almost new year’s and without snow (and other things) it really doesn’t feel like a celebration is about to or supposed to be happening!

And voila!

The finished product

Griffindor Scarf

This chapter is almost done December 29, 2009

As I approach the end of the year I’m being faced with a few realizations.  Three of which I will share today.

The first one is the scarf is almost done.  I have less than 1 foot and some fringe to go.  Which is good coz as I’ve mentioned I’m ‘handing it in’ tomorrow.  In my opinion it looks pretty good too!  Though my hands, fingers, and wrists, are quite sore – the pain comes and goes.  Once the scarf is done I’m going to hold off on knitting for at least a week or two.  I would like to inspire the same motivation in my digits to finish my mom’s cardigan!

Yesterday, I went by lettuce knit to register for 2 classes.  The first class I wanted to take was full so I signed for the next available in March.  It’s a class on continental knitting.  The next class I signed up for which is in January is to knit a seamless baby sweater – quick and easy!

In February, I’m hoping to take a sock workshop and a knitting for math/altering pattern workshop with the dkc’s winter workshop event in February.

My second realization is I need a break!

My third realization is that there is too much negativity in the world and I am going to work hard on not using or saying negative thoughts and words!  Good luck me! Swears count!  :-P

*back to work I go* Hi ho hi ho…

4 Feet 6 inches… December 27, 2009

Filed under: Projects — caboozan @ 6:21 pm

One foot and 6 inches to go!  I’m slowly losing my mind!  I’ve been home all day because I’m not feeling well, and haven’t even taken a breath of FRESH air yet – maybe I’ll just stick my head out the window!  Nonetheless, I’ve been knitting, tidying up, and watching an absurd amount of useless t.v.  I want to know why there are so many cheerleading movies! Ack!

Harry Potter Scarf So here she is – yes, I’ve decided to call the scarf a she! Why not?!  She’s almost there.  I have until Wednesday to have it completely done and dropped off.  From now on if anybody wants something smallish there will be a 2 month minimum request time. Minimum!

My wrists hurt, my fingers hurts, but back I go to knit some more! ;-)

In keeping with the holiday spirit, here’s a song for you.

Just wanted to say – that the backup singers scare me a little bit! ;-)

Happy holidays & Merry Christmas!
